"Ta' Tut Pena"
(Corn Pounding)

Corn is a staple food for the Dawan tribe on Timor Island, intricately woven into the culture and traditions of the Timorese people. This vital crop undergoes a unique preservation method where dried corn is tied into bundles and hung above a fireplace for smoking, ensuring natural preservation.

A traditional process known as "Tatut Pena/Titi Jagung" transforms the corn into small kernels by pounding it with a stone. These finely ground kernels are then cooked and serve as a nutritious substitute for rice, highlighting the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Dawan people in utilizing their natural resources to sustain their communities.
